How to de-clutter your home

Updated: Jul 30, 2019

Recently more and more of us are realising that we need to make the best of homes that we are living in, and the secret to falling in love with the house you call your home is to clear it out and de-clutter it.

Make a mess and take it one room at a time

To make a start clearing up your home, you’re going to have to make a mess first.

The best method for de-cluttering is to literally get everything out and lay it all down so you can see it all. This tactic works especially well for clearing out wardrobes.

Now stick to that room until you have finished, going back and forth between rooms will only make the task much bigger than it needs to be.

Set aside a day to complete one room and commit to it, you can stack everything else that doesn’t belong into boxes to deal with later.

Be fearless

A lot of people will find it difficult to chuck away their stuff, but you can’t attach sentiment to everything that you own.

When your home is cluttered, nothing is going to look good. So as you sift through your things, ask yourself which ones you actually really like or even use and if you don’t then why are you keeping it around? It’s probably time to let it go.

Store logically

When it comes to re-ordering your home, there are 2 simple rules. Firstly store similar items together so when you need something related to them you’ll know exactly where to find it.

Secondly, keep things in the room that they will be used in, when you start letting things move around the home it can start to become a bit of black hole and you will end up not being to find anything.

Child training

If you have children, then they can be the ultimate culprit for cluttering, charging around the house, and trailing clutter with them. Make sure to encourage good habits and to have somewhere to store away their toys to avoid them being all over the floor.

Get rid and feel better

Don’t sit there and think about how much all of this stuff that you’re getting rid of may have cost over the years, instead focus on how it can make you feel better.

Why not donate those items to your local charity shop or even better stick them on the web and reap a reward for all that hard work and make some money selling them online.

And relax

Now, without that clutter that was clogging up your home, you can have a well deserved rest and you will find it much easier to relax in your home in the future. Not only that but it might surprise you that you now find cleaning and decorating your home a lot more pleasurable.
